Summer 2018 Pt. 1 (237)-2

Oscar Romano

After 11 years in education, I transitioned out at the end of the 2019-2020 school year to found an Edtech startup in the virtual learning space. In my time as teacher, administrator, and principal, I became frustrated about the large scale systemic problems I couldn’t address from within a school. Instead of allowing my frustration to grow, I decided to use that energy within me to take action to solve these problems through a new startup (public details forthcoming).

In my former role, I was School Principal at YES Prep Gulfton, one campus among the 19 campuses that make up YES Prep Public Schools in Houston, TX. During my time as Principal, I received an M.S. degree in Organizational Leadership at Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

My post-secondary educational journey started when I attended Harvard University from 2005-2009 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Anthropology. Upon graduation, I became a Corps Member with Teacher for America from 2009-2011 and worked as an 8th grade science teacher in Fondren Middle School within the Houston Independent School District. In 2012, I joined YES Prep Brays Oaks as a teacher, eventually serving as an administrator there for five years before transitioning to YES Prep Gulfton as the School Director.

I dedicate much of my free time to Latino serving organizations. I have been an active member of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for the last four years and serve on the boards of three nonprofit organizations. As a Young Professionals Board Member, I support volunteer and fundraising efforts with BridgeYear, an organization that designs and implements Career Test Drive Fairs which give students hands-on exposure to high demand careers. Through my role on the Executive Board of Latino Texas PAC, I advocate for political change that addresses Latino specific needs by organizing events, managing the website, and engaging potential donors. In my role on the Board of Directors of the Astrodome Conservancy, I work to advance the Conservancy’s mission to promote the Astrodome’s legacy through preservation and development in partnership with Harris County, advocate for public access and create programming that inspires and engages.

I believe that Latino leaders should make their voice heard and support others in whatever capacity they can. I work to share educational leadership best practices through one of my blogs and stories of immigrants to the United States on this blog.

I reside in Houston, TX with Coco, my Border Collie, and Leo, my cat. I enjoy the company of a good book and running half marathons (I’ve run a few marathons too).

Cultural Background

I was born in New Jersey, but grew up surrounded by Salvadoran culture. I am proud to be Salvadoran and American. They are both crucial parts of my identity.

Education

I graduated with a B.A. from Harvard University in 2009 and will graduate with a M.S. from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education in 2019.

Work Experience

I’ve dedicated my adult life to the Latino community as a teacher, school administrator, and school principal in predominantly Latino serving schools.
